Introduction

Exploitation, Sexual Exploitation, Sexual Abuse, Sexual Harassment, and Child Abuse can have significant effects on the lives of Participants in humanitarian and development programs. In response to that, the American Bar Association (ABA) adopted the United Nations Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Six Core Principles Relating to Sexual Exploitation and Abuse as policy in 2014, which sets the international standards to prevent such conducts in these contexts. Consequently, the American Bar Association, Center for Global Programs (ABA CGP) has developed this “Safeguarding Policy to Protect Participants and Communities from Exploitation, Sexual Exploitation, Sexual Abuse, Sexual Harassment, and Child Abuse”, hereinafter referred to as the “Safeguarding Policy”, to protect program Participants and communities from Exploitation, Sexual Exploitation, Sexual Abuse, Sexual Harassment, and Child Abuse.

The objective of this Safeguarding Policy is to establish clear standards that align with ABA CGP zero-tolerance approach to Exploitation, Sexual Exploitation, Sexual Abuse, Sexual Harassment, and Child Abuse. This Safeguarding Policy ensures that the organization upholds the pledge to “Do No Harm” to the Participants and communities we engage with. The Policy applies to all ABA CGP Employees, Contractors, Volunteers, Implementing Partners, Vendors, and Subrecipients, subsequently referred to as Covered Persons, as defined in this Safeguarding Policy, and complements other existing ABA policies.

This Code of Conduct defines the expected behavior for all individuals involved in an American Bar Association, Center for Global Programs’ (ABA CGP) activity and it serves as a cornerstone of our commitment to preventing Exploitation, Sexual Exploitation, Sexual Abuse, Sexual Harassment, and Child Abuse. By adhering to these principles, we strive to create a safe and respectful environment where everyone can thrive.
