About the Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund

For nearly two decades, the ABA Business Law Section has been committed to supporting the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund, a pivotal force for bringing about a more diverse and inclusive legal profession.  You now have the opportunity to join our efforts and double the impact of the Section's support.

This year, the Section will contribute up to $20,000 in matching support to the Scholarship Fund when members, like you, make a charitable donation.

Each year, up to 20 incoming diverse law students receive $15,000 of financial assistance over the course of their three years in law school.  To date, 380 diverse students from across the country have received the Scholarship.  These exceptional recipients have overcome adversity, proven themselves through academic success and public service, and demonstrated the tenacity to excel within the legal profession.

Impact

Here are some examples of how your support of the ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship is not only impacting the field of law, but society overall:

  • Brian Larkin knew he wanted to be a lawyer after learning that his grandfather had been dragged off to jail for participating in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Providing essential cab service throughout the city for boycotters was the grounds for his grandfather’s arrest. Today, Brian is the Assistant General Counsel, in the fair lending division of a Fortune 500 company and uses his legal skills to volunteer at local legal clinics.
  • Yaneris Rosa immigrated from the Dominican Republic at a very young age and speaking little English. Very few people believed she would succeed in this country let alone become an attorney. Yaneris overcame every obstacle and has gone from Assistant General Counsel of the Honeywell Security Group to General Counsel Americas at Resideo. In every position, she actively promotes diversity in the workforce.
