The ABA Well-Being Campaign was launched to improve the substance use and mental health landscape of the legal profession, with an emphasis on helping legal employers support a healthy and sustainable work environment. The primary vehicle for the Campaign is a Pledge calling upon legal employers (including the judiciary, law firms, law schools, corporate entities, government agencies, and legal aid organizations) to: (a) recognize that substance use and mental health problems represent a significant challenge for the legal profession and acknowledge that more can and should be done to improve the health and well-being of those in the legal community (including judges, lawyers, staff, and students); and (b) support and prioritize the Pledge’s seven-point framework for building a better future.
Legal employers who do so will be recognized on this website as Signatories to the Pledge. Each Signatory will then receive a recommitment form annually, asking them to describe any steps taken toward the objectives set out in the framework during the previous year and to recommit to the Pledge.
Signatories are recognized as leaders in the national effort to support mental health and well-being in the legal profession. Participating in the Pledge is a visible way (with no fee) to help break down the four barriers to obtaining mental health support: stigma, cost, awareness, and accessibility.
Other benefits of becoming a Pledge Signatory include:
- Premier opportunity to demonstrate publicly your commitment to well-being in the legal profession.
- Alignment with a framework—through the Pledge’s seven commitments—that helps your organization structure its well-being focus and initiatives.
- Invitations to two complimentary workshops per year with opportunities to hear from well-being experts in the profession and to collaborate and brainstorm with other well-being advocates in the profession.
- Access to the ABA Well-Being Pledge Communities page, which provides an online platform to facilitate the sharing of ideas and resources among Signatories.
- Access to resources on the Communities page, including data collected from the recommitment forms, such as lists of speakers and vendors relied upon by Signatories in their well-being initiatives.
